Tesla Model X racks up $40M in sales on first day

Tesla Motors’ new Model X SUV racked up $40 million in advance sales the day after it was unveiled at the company’s design studios in Southern California.

Within hours of the unveiling and with no other promotion than a 27-minute video recording of the reveal, the buzz was out about Tesla’s latest electric vehicle. That night traffic to Tesla’s website soared 2,800 percent. Not only were visitors flocking to get their reservation in for a Model X, advance orders for the Model S sedan rose 30 percent.

About the same size as an Audi Q7, the Model X uses a stretched version of the Tesla Model S platform, which allows multiple motor and battery configurations. Starting with a single motor driving the rear wheels, customers can upgrade to dual-motor all wheel drive for 50 percent more torque and improved handling. The Model X can be ordered with a 60 or 85 kWh battery giving it an estimated range of more than 250 miles. The ultimate Model X is the Performance version, which has two of the more powerful motors: it will accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 4.4 seconds, 0.2 seconds faster than a Porsche 911.

The Model X’s “gotta-have” feature is the unique “Falcon Wing” rear doors that open up and out of the way, easing access to the second and third row of seats. Tesla CEO Elon Musk demonstrated that, when the doors are open, it’s possible to stand up in the second row and step directly to the third row.

The Model X has 40 percent more room than the Audi Q7 and has seating for seven large adults as well as a serious amount of luggage. It comes with Tesla’s 17-inch in-dash display that includes driver controls, vehicle apps, web connectivity and onboard charging.

Tesla did not release firm pricing for the Model X but the company says it will be “priced competitively” with competing upscale SUVs. Informed estimates of the price range from about $57,000 for the base model to about $100,000 for the decked-out Performance version.

The first Model Xs will leave Tesla’s Freemont. California, factory late next year. Volume production will begin in 2014. Tesla is looking to move 10,000 – 15,000 units per year.
