Lamborghini shows new SUV concept

Lamborghini officially introduced the Urus SUV concept at the 2012 Auto China Show in Beijing today. As with all Lamborghini vehicles, the Urus is named for a bull. “Urus” is another name for the Aurochs, a now-extinct ancestor to modern domestic cattle that lasted until 1627. Urus bulls could measure almost six feet tall at the shoulder. The Spanish fighting bull is close to the Urus in its appearance.

Unlike the LM-002 “Rambo Lambo” of the 1980s and 1990s, the Urus concept is a forecast of a modern, sleekly styled vehicle aimed at precisely at increasing Lamborghini sales and bottom-line profits. While just 328 LM-002s were built between 1986 and 1992, Lamborghini’s bosses in Germany want a production Urus to hit 3,000 units annually, nearly twice Lamborghini’s total vehicle sales in 2011.

“The Urus is a very concrete idea for the future of Lamborghini – as a third model line and as the perfect complement to our super sports cars,” says Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini. “SUVs stand for freedom and emotion. SUVs make up one of the most successful market segments worldwide. The Urus is the most extreme interpretation of the SUV idea; it is the Lamborghini of the SUVs.”

Lamborghini has been looking to expand its lineup with some type of vehicle that would be any everyday driver, not only to keep current Lambo owners in the fold, but to attract new buyers to the marque. The power-that-be in Sant’ Agata Bolognese, Ingolstadt and Wolfsburg considered a sedan, the Lamborghini Estoque Concept, first shown in Paris in 2008, to compete withe cars like the Porsche Panamera and Maserati Quattroporte, and an SUV. Ultimately, the SUV got the nod as offering more sales potential.

The goal is a vehicle with a 600-horsepower engine and the lowest CO2 emissions in its class, superior driving dynamics and an interior suited to the world’s one percent. Features like variable ground clearance, permanent all-wheel drive, adjustable aerodynamics and extensive use of carbon fiber materials to reduce weight are all part of the mix.

The concept’s interior is built around a leather-upholstered carbon fiber tunnel. There are four molded seats made of Lamborghini’s Forged Composite and fitted with single cushions to provide a lower and flatter seating position. The steering column is also noteworthy: other than the paddles for the dual-clutch transmission, there are no levers or stalks. Turn signals, lights and windshield wipers are all controlled from the steering wheel or center console. Driver information comes via a programmable TFT screen that replaces the typical instrument cluster. A separate touchscreen mounted in the center console handles navigation, entertainment and climate control and there’s a third touchscreen for rear seat passengers.

As Lamborghini is a subsidiary of Audi, which is in turn owned by Volkswagen, the engineers and designers in Sant’ Agata Bolognese have an incredible parts bin on which they can draw. While the engine will be pure Lamborghini, a production version of the Urus will most likely share a platform with the next generation of the Audi Q7 and have more than a couple of Porsche pieces in the mix. This is not only all to the good, but is likely going to be very necessary in order to be competitive in a segment that is limited in size but not in attraction for super-premium brands. Maserati will be entering the segment with a vehicle based on the Kubang; Bentley is seriously considering a SUV and Porsche and Land Rover are already playing in the six-figure SUV market.

Debuts: Sleek Traverse; hot Explorer

Chevrolet provided an early look at the new 2013 Chevrolet Traverse that will make its formal debut next week at the New York International Auto Show.

The latest generation of General Motors’ second-best-selling SUV shows a sleeker body style and new front end design cues that will become the standard for Chevy’s utilities. There’s a powerdome hood, a three-bar upper and two-bar lower grille design, new lamps, chrome accents around the grille and fog lamps, and sculpted front corners reminiscent of the Malibu. It’s a real improvement over the previous Chevy look. At the other end, redesigned taillights and the license plate pocket are positioned in the new liftgate.

“The new Traverse is a family vehicle without compromise,” said Chris Perry, vice president, Chevrolet Global Marketing and Strategy. “It is more capable than many sport-utility vehicles, with as much room as a minivan and better functionality than both. The Traverse is clever, capable and confident – and there when you need it most.”

“We have injected a stronger presence into the Traverse exterior by focusing on the details,” said Phillip Zak, GM director of exterior design. “The small but important changes give it a more vibrant personality that more closely reflects the lifestyles of the families who rely on the Traverse to get them through their busy lives.”

On the inside, upgrades include soft-touch surfaces on the instrument panel and front doors, contrasting stitching, chrome and silver accents. Optional blue ambient lighting is also offered. The front seats now have head restraints that can be adjusted up or down and fore and aft for greater comfort and safety. The eight-way power passenger seat includes leather trim and wood trim is standard on LT and LTZ.

There’s a new center stack built around a 6.5-inch color touch radio and the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system is available. The center stack also has large and illuminated climate controls that are easier to use and have a more upscale feel.

The Traverse is powered by a 288 horsepower, 3.6-liter V6 with direct injection and continuously variable valve timing that works through a six-speed automatic transmission with revised shift points.

The 2013 Traverse goes into production later this year.

Ford unveiled its new Explorer Sport, the first performance version of the company’s cornerstone SUV. It’s equipped with a twin-turbocharged EcoBoost that Ford says makes “at least” 350 horsepower and has highest projected fuel economy among gasoline-engine-powered, high-performance SUVs. Ford compares the new Explorer to the Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 saying the Explorer Sport gets a projected 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway. Of course, the Explorer has two fewer cylinders and weighs about 350 pounds less.

“Adding an EcoBoost drivetrain to Explorer Sport delivers even more fuel efficiency and performance to the lineup,” said Bill Gubing, Explorer chief engineer. “This is our highest- performance, most capable Ford Explorer ever.”

“Explorer Sport makes no compromises,” said Carl Widmann, vehicle engineering manager. “By carefully beefing the chassis and suspension, precisely calibrating the Terrain Management System and adding comfort and convenience features, we’ve delivered an SUV that delivers great dynamics and performance – while towing up to 5,000 pounds.”

The Explorer Sport comes with goodies like a paddle-shifted, six-speed automatic transmission with a revised 3.16 to 1 final drive ratio for responsive acceleration and better fuel economy when cruising and electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) rack with a faster ratio. There are larger brakes and a specially reinforced chassis.

You can get your Explorer Sport in one of four paint colors: Ruby Red Metallic Clearcoat, White Platinum Metallic Tri-Coat, Tuxedo Black Metallic or Ingot Silver Metallic. To set this top-of-the-line model apart from lesser Explorers, the port has special 20-inch painted and machined wheels, blacked-out headlamp and taillamp treatments, black roof rack rails, sideview mirror skull caps and a liftgate appliqué. There’s a Sport-specific grille in low-gloss Sterling Gray mesh, with contrasting ebony high-gloss bars. The black front lower fascia features a functional opening for additional cooling. Explorer logotype in billet-like black adds a bold identity statement. Subtle Sport and EcoBoost badges at the rear finish the liftgate.

Ford says the Sport’s interior was inspired by fashions from Balenciaga and Prada. The design features two-tone themes including available sculptured seats in Charcoal Black leather-trimmed seating with or without contrasting Sienna inserts. Stitching is emphasized to lend a handcrafted appearance, a cue that carries over to the steering wheel. The instrument and door panel appliqués have, quoting the Ford information, “a technical look,” whatever that is.

As the pinnacle of Explorer-dom, the Sport offers loads of standard and optional amenities including SYNC with MyFord Touch, automatic climate control and heated front-row seats. The Sport can also be ordered with 4-wheel drive that includes Ford’s Terrain Management System.

Like the Traverse, the new Explorer Sport is slated to enter production later this year.
